Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at support@studionotes.app if you cannot find an answer to your question.

StudioNotes is an organizer for songwriters, artists, producers, and recording engineers. It helps you track your songs, recordings, releases, collaborators, tasks, and music-related details across all your Apple devices.

You can download StudioNotes from the App Store.

No. StudioNotes does not upload or store audio. You can enter information about your songs and recordings, but the audio itself stays wherever you keep it (DAW, files, streaming services, etc.). StudioNotes does have a place to store links to wherever you keep your audio files though so you can easily get back to them with just a click.

All of your data is stored locally on your devices and in your personal iCloud account.
StudioNotes does not collect, store, or access any of your content.

Yes. You can use StudioNotes without an iCloud account, and you can create songs, recordings, releases, contacts, and to-dos normally.

However, without iCloud:

  • Your data stays only on that one device
  • It will not sync to your other Apple devices
  • Your data will not be backed up through iCloud

If you later sign in to iCloud, StudioNotes will begin syncing your data automatically and keep it updated across all your devices.

The same limitations will occur if you are over your storage limit with iCloud

No. We cannot see your songs, recordings, collaborator lists, notes, or anything else you enter. Everything stays private in your iCloud.

Yes! StudioNotes is a universal app. Your project details stay in sync on all your Apple devices through iCloud.

Not currently and there are no current plans to support those platforms.

You can create up to 10 total entries (songs, recordings, and releases combined).
All features work normally while you’re under the limit.
After that, you can continue viewing and exporting your data, but you’ll need a subscription to add or edit items. You will also probably see a reminder to subscribe once you hit that limit. Those subscriptions allow us to keep working on StudioNotes and add more features too, so it's really worth subscribing.

The StudioNotes Pro subscription gives you unlimited songs, recordings, and releases, plus ongoing updates and improvements. Everything else works the same—your data stays private in your iCloud.

You maintain full access to your data.

You can still view everything, export PDFs, print lyric sheets, and navigate your catalog.
You just won’t be able to add or edit items until you resubscribe.

StudioNotes does not currently offer real-time collaboration or shared projects.
However, you can share individual items with other StudioNotes users, and they can import them into their own library. We are investigating other types of sharing between collaborators in future releases.

Yes. You can also export any of these items as StudioNotes document files
(.studiosong, .studiorecording, .studiocontact, or .studiorelease). These files can be opened in StudioNotes — even in the free version — so other users can view the information or save it into their own library.

You can export PDFs for any song, recording, release, or contact. PDFs are ideal for sharing with co-writers, producers, musicians, studios, labels, and publishers who don’t use StudioNotes (...yet?)

StudioNotes documents are snapshots, not live links: if you later update something in the app, previously exported files won’t change. And when someone imports a document, a few details may be missing if it references people or items they don’t already have in their collection (for example, a songwriter that isn’t yet in their contacts).

Short version:
PDFs are best for sharing information with anyone.
StudioNotes documents are best for transferring structured data between users .

Yes! StudioNotes includes a clean, easy-to-read lyric sheet export, perfect for studio sessions or performances. StudioNotes song documents also contain the lyrics and can even go into the full-screen lyrics mode for performances when opened in StudioNotes.

Yes. You can customize your keywords, genres, collaborator roles, and registration/link types so StudioNotes fits your own workflow. For example, if you are a member of a service that you use to register your songs that is not part of the StudioNotes default list of services, you can add that service as an Identifier type and it will show up just like the other identifiers like ISRC, ISWC, etc. You can also add URLs so if you have your own preferred site where you upload the latest mix of your recording or you have a preferred site for collaboratively writing songs, you can add those services as Link Types and the links will show up just like the way that the streaming service links appear for recordings and releases.

Check out the Settings window where you can configure all of this information.  Find out how to create your own Links and Identifiers

Those are badges that help you quickly see what each item has—such as artwork, registrations, links, agreements, or missing details. It’s a fast way to know what still needs attention or to know that some piece of information is already added. The details pages will show a legend of which badges have been set with a text description of what it means.

You can add your own badges by adding Links and Identifiers.

Yes. You can use StudioNotes offline.
Your changes will sync with your other devices the next time you’re connected to the internet.

StudioNotes automatically syncs your data with iCloud, just like other iCloud-enabled apps. Your information also benefits from your normal device backups (iCloud or Finder). So when you set up a new iPhone, iPad, or Mac, StudioNotes will restore your latest data from iCloud automatically.

However, syncing is not the same as backup. If you delete a song or update its details, that change is synced to iCloud almost immediately -- meaning there’s no built-in way to roll back to an earlier version inside StudioNotes.

If you want an extra layer of safety, you can export songs, recordings, releases, or contacts to files or PDFs so you have your own copies outside the app.

A lot of common questions about how StudioNotes works are answered are on the How StudioNotes Works page. There is also a lot of extra details on working with lyrics and creating links and identifiers. If you still have questions, please reach out via our Contact Us page.

StudioNotes is built and maintained by an independent developer with decades of experience designing and shipping software, and is informed by real-world use as a songwriter and producer. The app is actively maintained and updated over time.
